Bacterial Vaginosis: Symptoms And Treatment

The majority of women will suffer from bacterial vaginosis at one point or another during their lifetime. It's been estimated that as many as 3 out of every 4 women will experience at least a moderate vaginal infection. It's most likely to occur while a woman is fertile, but hormonal changes during menopause could also allow it to develop.
In a normal, healthy vaginal environment, the good bacteria keeps the unhealthy bacteria in check without any help. However, when this balance gets disrupted for whatever reason, the harmful bacteria then begins to take over. The result is generally the development of bacterial vaginosis.
While bacterial vaginosis is nothing to be real concerned about, it's still important to get diagnosed and begin treating it. If you ignore it or don't get treated properly, then it can cause more health issues such as infertility, preterm labor, and pelvic inflammatory disease.
BV can be complicated to diagnose because sometimes it's asymptomatic. Some of the most common symptoms however are a fish-like odor and vaginal discharge. The color varies, but tends to be grayish or white. Other symptoms include pain during sexual intercourse and urination, redness, burning, and itching of the vagina. These are less common however.
Unfortunately, no causes have really been discovered to this date. Not knowing the cause makes it harder to prevent. As mentioned, we know that bacterial vaginosis occurs when the natural balance is disrupted. Some of the risk factors identified include douching, sexual activity, douching, and antibiotics.
Probably the most common treatment these days is antibiotics, but more and more women are turning to natural remedies. Some of the most popular ones include garlic, yogurt, and boric acid among others. While natural remedies may not be strong enough to cure the condition, they are good at providing instant relief. Inserting cold yogurt can feel really good when experiencing burning and irritation.
Natural remedies are that much more effective when you apply several of them, as opposed to just yogurt or garlic. Some women have claimed that their condition was gone after using natural remedies, as they do work to create the right balance in the vagina. Paying attention to what may trigger the condition is a good way to prevent it from recurring again in the future.
Bacterial vaginosis can be embarrassing and ignoring it might be the easy thing to do. But doing so will only have a detrimental effect on your health eventually. The sooner you get diagnosed, the easier it will be to get rid of.
